Security Update
Just a quick update. As we noted in the April 29 Country Council meeting, the arrest of the two Salafists by the police in Berrechid was an event that needed greater attention by everyone. The two men were arrested for passing counterfeit currency in the initial news release. However, it was later reported ( just after our country council meeting coincidentally) that the two men had been manufacturing explosive material. The explosive material was TATP (the same material manufactured and used in the May 16 bombings) and there was sufficient quantity for approximately 14 backpack type bombs. On Friday, April 30, three more Salafists were arrested by the police in a raid on a safehouse in Casablanca. The three men were wanted for their involvement in the May 16 bombings and were connected to the two men arrested in Berrechid. The targets and timing of potential terrorist attacks by this group are unknown at this time. As more information develops, I’ll pass it on accordingly. Doug Allison RSO Rabat
